Buhler offers two apprenticeship programs at its North American headquarters in Plymouth, MN. Apprentices start in either the 3-year Mechatronics Technician (Mechanical and Electrical Technology) or 2-year Business Apprenticeship program. Apprentices attend Hennepin Technical College 2 days a week and receive on-the-job training 3 days a week. Apprentices are paid for a full 5-day week, so they are getting paid even while they are at college. Buhler covers the college tuition, books and fees. The apprenticeship program rotates the apprentices through different departments, so they can explore what different groups do and where they may want to work in the future. At the completion of their apprenticeship, the apprentices have an associates degree, a journeyworker card, as well as an international apprenticeship certificate. As a family-owned company based in Switzerland, Buhler has been developing young adults into long term skilled employees for many years. Employees throughout the company started as apprentices just out of high school and went on to follow their passions and skills into engineering and business leadership positions.
